Vampire Crabs are semi-terrestrial animals and are NOT fully aquatic. They require a paludarium with both land and freshwater areas and should not be maintained in a traditional aquarium. We also recommend keeping only a single Vampire Crab species per enclosure.

Species Overview

The Red Devil Vampire Crab is one of the most intensely colored members of the Geosesarma genus. Known for its rich red coloration and brilliant yellow eyes, this striking species quickly becomes the focal point of any paludarium. Its dramatic appearance and active personality have made it a favorite among hobbyists seeking a truly unique display animal.

Unlike many semi-terrestrial crabs that remain hidden for much of the day, Red Devil Vampire Crabs are often observed exploring their environment, climbing hardscape, and searching for food among leaf litter and mosses. Their vibrant red coloration creates a stunning contrast against tropical plants, driftwood, and natural botanicals commonly used in bioactive enclosures.

Like many Vampire Crabs, coloration can vary somewhat between individuals based on age, sex, genetics, molt cycle, diet, and environmental conditions. Mature males often develop more intense coloration and larger claws, while many individuals become increasingly colorful as they mature and complete additional molts.
